Homeschooling and Socialization

“What about socialization?” This is the first question many parents are asked when they mention the word “homeschooling”.

This is also the reason (or should I say the excuse) many people do not want to homeschool their children.

Homeschooling parents call it the dreaded "S" word.

The real question is, why do people think when children are homeschooled their social skills are overlooked?

The myth is that children will not learn to get along with others and will not develop good social skills unless they go to public/private school.

Let’s face it; there are approximately six billion people in the world. Take a minute to think about all those you know well.

Do they all have good social skills because they went to public or private school? Oh, that's what I thought!

So what's the problem? Why do parents get haunted with the same “socialization” issue over and over?

“To educate a man in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society." - Theodore Roosevelt

Studies show that homeschooled children are more sociable, self-confident and independent than children attending public schools.

Homeschoolers are encouraged to speak to all age groups. Children in public schools are segregated by age and sometimes forced into silence.

Another misconception is that homeschooled children are loners and spend their time around the kitchen table.

On the contrary, they are out honing their socialization and knowledge skills by interacting and learning from people of all ages, genders, and interests.

Because they don’t have to spend six to eight hours sitting behind a desk, they have the opportunity to go to museums, national parks, fire departments, the library, etc., where the REAL society contacts are made.

I honestly believe the environment a child is shaped in plays an important role in their lives; therefore, they should have a choice of who they socialize with.

Children should have the liberty to learn without the negative distractions and influences that are so common in today's society.

Proper education is an integral part of your children’s future success. However, education is not only nourished by books and curriculums, but also in the way they learn to conduct themselves on a day to day basis.

Proper manners, vocabulary, and socializing skills all play a part in how they will approach their future.
