Reasons for Homeschooling

Nowadays parents have many reasons for homeschooling. Many parents are taking in consideration the important issues in life such as family, religion and social values they want to pass on to their children.

These values are the ones that will determine the future of our children and generations to come.

"You can't learn in school what the world is going to do next year".

Henry Ford

Top Ten Reasons for Homeschooling

1. Family

The most important reason for homeschooling is our desire to truly appreciate the gift God gave us; our children.

We want to be able to enjoy the little things as well as the milestones in their lives. We want to instill in them the family values we grew up with.

2. Learning

Homeschooling values about learning are different from those of public schools. In addition to the curriculum based learning, parents can teach a particular set of values, beliefs, and worldview to their children.

They also have the opportunity to hone in the skills that are most interesting to them.

3. Time

When homeschooling you can academically accomplish more in less time than in public schools. Children spend six to eight hours in school every day. With such a high student/teacher ratio, how much of that time is spent focusing on truly teaching your children?

After a long day at school, how much time do you have to spend helping with homework and undoing the habits they pick up? How much time do they have to work on the things they really enjoy?

How much time do they have to socialize with older children or adults? But most importantly, how much quality time do you spend with them?

4. Socialization

I get this question all the time and I say with pride and joy that one of my main reasons for homeschooling is “socialization”.

People think it’s harmful to isolate children for 30 hours a week from interacting with same age peers. Homeschooling parents can provide guided and reasoned social interactions with youthful peers and adults. After all, in the real world, will they interact with people of their own age only?

Everywhere we go my daughter gets praised for her communication, great behavior and social skills. She is able to interact with people of all ages.

5. Curriculum

Another reason for homeschooling is that you can customize or individualize the curriculum and learning environment for each child according to their learning style and individual needs. You can use different educational or learning approaches other than those typical in schools.

6. Religious values

Another reason for homeschooling is to install religious values. Our lives are not defined exclusively by the values of our society. They also reflect the important elements of who we are and what we are set to do during our time on earth.

Faith, love, how we treat others, and how we complete our lives journey are very important values we must to teach our children in order to build a better future for them and generations to come.

7. Sick Children

One of the reasons for homeschooling is due to health. Children with certain illnesses are without a doubt better off being homeschooled.

With the high student/teacher ratio, how much can a teacher monitor your sick child? Do they have the time to constantly check for certain symptoms?

If your child has dangerous allergies, will they make sure your child does not accidentally eat something they are allergic to? Let’s face it; they simply don’t have the time to focus only on your child.

8. Gifted or Special Needs Children

Children who work above or below grade level need special attention that unfortunately can’t be provided in public schools. Homeschooling allows them to learn at a comfortable pace according to their specific needs.

9. Cost

Parents of all income levels can homeschool. There are many ways to reduce the cost of curriculum and activities. Some families are able to design their own programs, hence makes homeschooling virtually free.

10. Environment

Provide a safer environment for children, because of physical violence, drugs, alcohol, and psychological abuse.

"Life is my college. May I graduate well, and earn some honors". Louisa May Alcott

There are many other reasons for homeschooling. Whatever your main reason is, make sure you research and understand the Homeschooling Requirements and Laws for your state.
