Getting Started On Homeschooling

Many people ask me if getting started on homeschooling is difficult. Getting started on homeschooling is a lot of work and can be challenging, but not difficult.

It takes commitment on part of parents and children. However, the benefits outweigh the challenges.

If you want to be successful in your children’s education, you must have the will and a positive attitude to perform this challenging, yet rewarding journey.

If you don’t possess these attributes, then getting started will be very difficult and may do more harm than good to you and your children.

Yes, getting started on homeschooling is challenging. There will be fun and exciting days and there will be days you feel “inadequate” teaching your own children. Don’t worry; I’ve been there, it happens to all of us.

The will and positive attitude to getting started on homeschooling is what keeps you going on those “feeling inadequate” days.

10 Great Tips to Getting Started on Homeschooling

1. Understand the homeschooling laws in your state

Before you decide on homeschooling or perform other research how to get started on homeschooling, your must understand the homeschooling requirements and laws in your state.

2. Seek advice from other homeschooling parents or from books

Seeking advice from other homeschooling parents and books on how to start homeschooling is wonderful; however, don’t worry about agreeing in one way or another to getting started on homeschooling.

There is no right or wrong way. Remember, you and your family are unique, which makes your needs, interest, teaching and learning styles also unique.

3. Find your own homeschooling “niche”

Don’t try to mimic how other people teach. Finding your own style when getting started will provide value in a way that comes easy and naturally to you, which will make you and your children’s homeschooling experience successful and fun.

4. Get organized

Housekeeping 101 is not a pre-requisite to getting started on homeschooling. However, one organization factor that is important when getting started on homeschooling is to organize the room and materials you will be using.

Keeping things in order and in the same place allows you to find things quickly, avoiding distractions so you can stay focused on your main goal.

5. Understand your child’s learning style

Understanding your child’s learning style is imperative before getting started on homeschooling.

This will allow you to prioritize their needs, interest and will save you time and money by choosing the right curriculum, and allowing the right amount of time on each assignment.

6. Setting up a specific school area

Most people work on the kitchen table, sofa or even the floor. Some have small areas with desks and bookshelves. I work in a closet. Yes, a closet! I’ve taken the doors of my office closet and made it into our specific homeschooling work area.

This is a great solution when you are a WAHM (Work At Home Mom)or WAHD (Work At Home Dad) allowing time to work while they are performing “do it yourself” tasks. This way you are with them in the room if they need your help.

7. Set up a daily routine

Children strive on routines. Setting a daily routine helps you and your children stay organized and on track. This is extremely beneficial when you are a WAHM (Work At Home Mom) or WAHD (Work At Home Dad).

Setting a daily routine for your work is also very important as it minimizes stress while homeschooling.

I get most of my work done in the morning between 4:30 – 9:00AM while my child is still sleeping. This allows me to get a head start on the day, which allows me to dedicate the necessary time to do homeschooling.

8. Join a local or state support group

Joining a local or state support group is beneficial. They can provide suggestions for issues you may be experiencing, curriculums, organize field trips or simply as a social aspect.

9. Attend a Homeschooling Convention

Attending a Homeschooling convention in your area is very advantageous. You can choose to attend the breakout sessions you may benefit the most from.

The breakout sessions are performed by experienced homeschoolers. You are encouraged to ask questions and they usually share their experiences with you. You can ask advice on curriculums, best practices, etc.

There are usually hundreds of retailers are on site. This allows you to speak with them on a one-to-one basis about the curriculums they provide. You can also get a close look at each one to see if it’s the best for your children.

One word of caution, everyone has “the best curriculum” for you. Use your best judgment. Once you purchase the product, you may not be able to return it.

The best thing to do is take the information home with you and take your time analyzing it. This will ensure you purchase something you and your children will enjoy.

10. Keep good records

Record keeping is essential. You can download a simple form or you can use a special software.

Homeschool Tracker provides a free basic edition or you can purchase the premium edition for $49 (USD).
